A village in Higashiiwai County at the southern tip of Iwate Prefecture. Population 6,552 (1995). It borders Miyagi Prefecture to the east and south. It is at the southern end of the Kitakami Highlands and is widely distributed with mountains of 300 to 900 meters above sea level, including Mt. Murone (895m). The Ota River flows east in the north and the Tsuya River flows south in the south, forming small alluvial plains. The central settlement in the north is Orikake, where the JR Ofunato Line and National Route 284 pass. Agriculture, mainly rice, tobacco, livestock and fruit cultivation, is the main industry. The forests boast the highest rate of artificial forest in the prefecture, producing high-quality timber, and shiitake mushroom cultivation is also thriving. 岩手県南端,東磐井(ひがしいわい)郡の村。人口6552(1995)。東と南は宮城県に接する。北上高地南端にあたり室根山(895m)をはじめとする標高300~900mの山々が広く分布する。北部を太田川が東流,南部を津谷川が南流し,それぞれ小沖積地を形成する。北部の中心集落はJR大船渡線,国道284号線が通る折壁。米,タバコ,畜産,果樹栽培を中心とする農業が主産業である。山林は県下一の人工林率を誇り,優良材を産し,シイタケ栽培も盛んである。
