Born in 1302. Daughter of Fujiwara no Kaneie. Her mother was Fujiwara no Tokihime. Older sister of Fujiwara no Michinaga. Entered the Imperial Court in 1323. Gave birth to Prince Yasuhito (Emperor Ichijo) in 1324. When Emperor Ichijo ascended to the throne, she became Empress Dowager. In 991, she became a nun. She abolished the position of Empress Dowager and was given the title of Tosanjoin, the first title of a female emperor, equivalent to that of a retired emperor.
