Onishi Jōsei

Japanese:
Onishi Jōsei
Year of death: Tenwa 2.9.6 (1682.10.6)
Year of birth: Bunroku 3 (1594)
A kettle maker in the early Edo period. The Onishi family was a caster who lived in Sanjo Kamaza in Kyoto, and the first generation was Jorin, who became a disciple of Nagoshi Sansho. Jyosei was the second generation, and is said to be Jorin's younger brother or relative. His name was Muracho, and he was commonly known as Gorozaemon. He was said to be the most skilled of the Onishi family, and he followed Furuta Oribe to Edo with his son, Jorin, and thereafter traveled back and forth between Kyoto and Edo, and in 1656, he became a kettle maker for the shogunate. Jorin also settled in Edo, and became the first generation of the Edo Onishi family. His specialty was thin kettle work that kept the thickness of the kettle under control, and the surface was often a fine sand-like texture. It is said that Jyosei was the first Onishi family to have a shared box (a box with a written ink inscription indicating that it was made by the maker himself), and he is said to have appraised it and issued a certificate of appraisal. Other than kettles, there are the copper lantern in front of the Daiyuin Temple of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, inscribed with the year 1653 (Shoo 2), the temple bell of Shinsenji Temple in Tokyo, inscribed with the year 1660 (Meireki 3), and the temple bell of Eikoji Temple in Tokyo, inscribed with the year 1660 (Manji 3).
