A representative figure of the Jewish bourgeoisie, who were an important driver of the development of capitalism in Poland. He attended a Polish school at the behest of his father, who was keen for assimilation. At the age of 17, he went to Hamburg to serve as a business apprentice and then studied at the University of Berlin. Immediately after the defeat of the November Uprising, he returned to Warsaw to take over his father's business, and at the age of 28, he made a fortune in the tobacco monopoly contracted by the government. He married at the age of 33, at which time he converted to Lutheran Christianity. He showed a strong interest in social reform, and in 1859 he bought the newspaper Gazeta Codzienna and had the popular writer of the time, JI Kraszewski, take up his arguments.

ポーランドにおける資本主義発達の重要な担い手であったユダヤ系ブルジョアジーを代表する人物。同化に熱心な父親の指示でポーランド人の学校に通う。17歳のときハンブルクに出て商売の見習いに従事し，さらにベルリン大学で学ぶ。十一月蜂起の敗北直後にワルシャワに帰って父親の商売を継ぎ，28歳のとき政府から請負ったタバコ専売業で財をなす。33歳で結婚するが，そのときルター派キリスト教に改宗している。社会改革に強い関心を示し，1859年には《ガゼータ･ツォジェンナGazeta Codzienna》紙を買収して時の人気作家J.I.クラシェフスキに論陣を張らせている。
