1812‐78 A representative figure of the Jewish bourgeoisie, who were an important driver of the development of capitalism in Poland. He attended a Polish school at the behest of his father, who was keen for assimilation. At the age of 17, he went to Hamburg to serve as a business apprentice and then studied at the University of Berlin. Immediately after the defeat of the November Uprising, he returned to Warsaw to take over his father's business, and at the age of 28, he made a fortune in the tobacco monopoly contracted by the government. He married at the age of 33, at which time he converted to Lutheran Christianity. He showed a strong interest in social reform, and in 1859 he bought the newspaper Gazeta Codzienna and had the popular writer of the time, JI Kraszewski, take up his arguments.
