The meaning varies depending on the concept of Emishi, but since the Kamakura period, when the concept of Emishi = Ezo = Ainu was established, it has referred to trade with the Ainu or their main habitat, Ezo Island and Ezochi (present-day Hokkaido). Transportation and exchange relations between Honshu society and the Ainu have been observed since ancient times, but it was only from the Kamakura period onwards, when trade between distant regions developed against the backdrop of the development of social and regional division of labor, that it began to have a positive historical meaning. At that time, the Ando clan of Tosaminato, Tsugaru, played an important role in this trade. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
