Seven modes used in ancient Greek music. Greek modes were considered to be sung-down scales, and there were seven types: Mixolydian (one note L-L), Lydian (one note C-C), Phrygian (one note D-D), Dorian (one note E-E), Hippolydian (one note F-F), Hippophrygian (one note T-G), and Hippodorian (one note E-A). These names were later applied to the names of the modes of Gregorian chant (→ Church modes) through the medieval music theorist Boethius, but the range and modal composition are completely different.

古代ギリシアの音楽で用いられた7種類の旋法。ギリシア旋法は歌い下る音階として考えられ，ミクソリディア (1点ロ～ロ) ，リディア (1点ハ～ハ) ，フリギア (1点ニ～ニ) ，ドリア (1点ホ～ホ) ，ヒポリディア (1点ヘ～ヘ) ，ヒポフリギア (1点ト～ト) ，ヒポドリア (1点イ～イ) の7種類があった。これらの名称は，中世の音楽理論家ボエチウスを経て，グレゴリオ聖歌の旋法 (→教会旋法 ) の名称にも適用されたが，音域や旋法の組成はまったく異なっている。
