Born: May 25, 1865, Sonnemeer Died October 9, 1943 in Amsterdam. Dutch physicist. Studied under H. Kammerlingh Onnes and H. Lorentz at Leiden University, where he was a lecturer (1890), and a professor at the University of Amsterdam (1900). In 1896, he discovered the Zeeman effect, which is the splitting of spectral lines from a light source placed in a strong magnetic field. This was considered to be proof of Lorentz's theory of the electron. In 1902, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Lorentz. Zeeman |
