Taisho shrimp (Penaeus chinensis)
A large shrimp of the family Penaeidae, which is particularly important in the fisheries industry, that can reach a body length of 27 cm. Its standard Japanese name is Korean shrimp (illustration). It is a species endemic to the Bohai Bay and Yellow Sea in China, and those sold in the Japanese market are mainly caught by trawling in the Yellow Sea, but it is important to note that all penaeid shrimp that do not have special markings are sold under the product name "Taisho shrimp" among shrimp imported from all over the world. It is light gray in color, with a crimson-brown tail fan and a black-brown tip. In March, it begins migrating from offshore toward the coastal areas, reaching the coast of the Shandong Peninsula in April, and the spawning grounds in the inner Bohai Bay in May.
