A city in the southwestern tip of Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1921. It occupies the lowlands at the southern foot of the Ashio Mountains and along the Watarase River, and borders Sano City, Kiryu City, and Ota City in Gunma Prefecture. The city center was one of the centers of the ancient Keno Province (Tochigi and Gunma), and in the Middle Ages, it was the birthplace of the Ashikaga clan and their residence was located there. It is known as a silk weaving production area, and since the Edo period, it has been counted as one of the three major textile manufacturing areas in the Kanto region along with Kiryu and Hachioji, and since the Meiji period, it has produced a lot of Ashikaga Meisen. After World War II, tricot production was popular, but now industries such as plastics, weaving machines, and dyeing machines are active. The Ryomo Line, Tobu Isesaki Line, and Kita-Kanto Expressway run through the city. There are the remains of the Ashikaga School (historic site) and Bannaji Temple (historic site), the former residence of the Ashikaga clan.
