A city in the southwestern tip of Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1921. It occupies the lowlands at the southern foot of the Ashio Mountains and along the Watarase River, and borders Sano City, Kiryu City, and Ota City in Gunma Prefecture. The city center was one of the centers of the ancient Keno Province (Tochigi and Gunma), and in the Middle Ages, it was the birthplace of the Ashikaga clan and their residence was located there. It is known as a silk weaving production area, and since the Edo period, it has been counted as one of the three major textile manufacturing areas in the Kanto region along with Kiryu and Hachioji, and since the Meiji period, it has produced a lot of Ashikaga Meisen. After World War II, tricot production was popular, but now industries such as plastics, weaving machines, and dyeing machines are active. The Ryomo Line, Tobu Isesaki Line, and Kita-Kanto Expressway run through the city. There are the remains of the Ashikaga School (historic site) and Bannaji Temple (historic site), the former residence of the Ashikaga clan. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 177.76km2 . 154,530 people (2010).

栃木県南西端の市。1921年市制。足尾山地南麓と渡良瀬(わたらせ)川沿岸の低地を占め,佐野市,群馬県の桐生,太田の両市と境を接する。中心市街は古代毛野国(栃木・群馬)の一中心で,中世には足利氏発祥の地としてその居館が置かれた。絹織物の産地として知られ,江戸時代から桐生(きりゅう),八王子とともに関東三大機業地の一つに数えられ,明治以降は足利銘仙を多産した。第2次世界大戦後はトリコット生産が盛んであったが,現在はプラスチック,織機,染色機械などの工業が活発となった。両毛線,東武伊勢崎線,北関東自動車道が通じる。足利学校跡(史跡),足利氏居館跡の鑁阿(ばんな)寺(史跡)がある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。177.76km2。15万4530人(2010)。
