Hong Gyeong-rae's Rebellion

Japanese:
Hong Gyeong-rae's Rebellion
A popular uprising in 1812 at the end of the Yi Dynasty in Korea. It is also called the Pyongan Province Peasant War. Hong Gyeong-nae was a fallen yangban (a noble family) from Yonggang County, Pyongan Province, and was one of the ringleaders. He worked as a geomancer (fortune teller for burial sites) and spent nearly 10 years preparing for the uprising while wandering around the country gathering comrades. He issued a manifesto calling for the end of discrimination against people from Pyongan Province and for opposition to the autocratic rule of the young king's in-laws and relatives by marriage, and called for the overthrow of the central government. Ideologically, it was a fantasy in which a fictitious character named Jeong Si-su, a saint of the world, led 100,000 iron cavalrymen, the surviving descendants of Ming dynasty ministers, to purge the eastern part of Korea.
