...The treatment of eye disease in the picture scroll "Yamainososhi" from the end of the Heian period is said to be a picture of an ophthalmologist inserting needles into a man with cataracts. In Japan, it has long been called "shirosokohi" or "umisokohi," and in the Edo period, the founder of the prestigious Majima school of ophthalmology, Majima Seigen Sozu, was an expert in acupuncture for cataracts. Also, the late Edo period ophthalmologist Habu Gensho (son of Habu Genseki) has a book called "Hakunai-e Surgery Jinmei" which contains only clinical records of cataracts, and it is known that he had many cataract patients. ...
