Japanese: シラキュース - しらきゅーす(英語表記)Syracuse
Syracuse - Shirakyusu (English spelling) Syracuse

A city on the shores of Lake Onandoga in central New York State, United States. Population 147,306 (2000). It is the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding area, and is also important as an import port and a transportation hub. The manufacturing of electrical products, electronic devices, automobiles, and aircraft parts is thriving, and chemical and printing/publishing industries are also major industries. A full-scale trading post was established by white people in 1786. Three years later, salt production was established, and it flourished to the point that it was said that "all salt used in the United States comes from Syracuse," but it declined after the Civil War. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and the subsequent opening of the railroad had a major impact on the rapid urban development. The city is also a university town, with Syracuse University, known for its Chinese studies, at its center.
