Kamuikotan metamorphic belt

Kamuikotan metamorphic belt

A metamorphic belt that stretches 300 km north to south, centered on Kamuikotan, west of Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. It is also called the Kamuikotan Belt. It is characterized by high-pressure metamorphism of the prehnite-pumpellyite and glaucophanite schist facies, and contains minerals that recrystallize at relatively low temperatures and high pressures, such as glaucophane, lawsonite, aragonite, and jadeite. The existence of serpentine mélange is also known.

Radiometric dating using the potassium-argon method indicates that this metamorphism occurred between approximately 145 and 51 million years ago. It was once thought to be a counterpart to the high-temperature Hidaka Metamorphic Belt to the east, but this idea has now been rejected as the Kamuikotan Metamorphic Belt is older in age.
