Salomon, Erich

Salomon, Erich
Born: April 28, 1886 in Berlin
[Died] July 7, 1944, Auschwitz German photojournalist. He obtained his doctorate in law from the University of Munich, but in 1925, he became a photographer after becoming fascinated with the then newly developed Ermanox indoor rapid-shooting camera. He then acquired a Leica with its excellent rapid-shooting function, and, hiding it in his bag or bowler hat, he would visit the workplaces of politicians and celebrities, as well as the conference halls of European political summits and the League of Nations, and take secret photos of their faces. French Prime Minister Briand said, "All an international conference needs is a couple of foreign ministers, a table, and Salomon," and the public gave his photographs the name Candide Photos, because they were fair and frank. However, because he was Jewish, he fled to the Netherlands for a time, but was later captured by the Nazis and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp with his wife and son.
