Bādarāyana (English spelling)

A philosopher of the Indian Vedanta school. He is said to be the author of the school's fundamental scripture, the Brahma Sutra, but in fact lived earlier. He preached that liberation is the goal of life, and placed the utmost importance on the recognition of Brahman as a means to achieve it. This position of his was carried over to the Brahma Sutra, and became the basic position of the Vedanta school. For this reason, he came to be regarded as the founder of this school in later generations.

インドのベーダーンタ学派の哲学者。同学派の根本聖典『ブラフマ・スートラ』の著者と伝えられるが、実際にはそれ以前の人である。彼は、解脱(げだつ)を人生の目的と説き、その手段としてブラフマン（梵(ぼん)）の認識をもっとも重視した。この彼の立場は『ブラフマ・スートラ』に受け継がれ、ベーダーンタ学派の基本的立場となった。そのため彼は後世この学派の開祖とみなされるようになった。
