A newspaper that seeks to protect the interests of those in power, such as the government, political parties, and sometimes large corporations. In France, the Gazette, founded in 1631 by Théophraste Renaudeau with the support of Prime Minister Armand de Richelieu, was a representative official newspaper that continued to play the role of official gazette under the generous protection of the Bourbon dynasty. In Japan, the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun, founded in 1872 (Meiji 5), had been supported by the Ministry of Justice since its founding, but after Gen'ichiro Fukuchi joined the company in December 1873, it further strengthened its ties with the government and became a representative official newspaper.
