A type of keyboard instrument. It is in the same family as the harpsichord, but is smaller and simpler, and some do not have legs. The name comes from the Latin "spina" (thorn, needle), and there is one string for each key, which is plucked with a nail attached to the end of a jack (a stringing mallet). There are rectangular or irregularly shaped (such as a pentagon) instruments with strings stretched on both sides from the player's perspective, and triangular ones with strings stretched at a 45° angle toward the back. It became popular for home use in the 17th and 18th centuries. → Virginal

鍵盤(けんばん)楽器の一種。ハープシコードと同属だが，より小型で単純化され，脚のつかないものもある。その名はラテン語のspina（とげ，針）に由来し，鍵盤１つに対し弦は１本で，ジャック（打弦槌(つい)）の先端に付けられた爪(つめ)ではじかれる。奏者から見て左右に弦を張った長方形あるいは不規則形（五角形など）のものと，奥へ斜め45°に張った三角形のものとがある。17―18世紀，家庭用に普及した。→バージナル
