Chotragram (meaning "16 villages") in Bengali. A port city at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River in southeastern Bangladesh. It is the capital of Chittagong State and the administrative seat of Chittagong District. It was known to Arab sailors from the 10th century, and later called Porto Grande by the Portuguese. It was conquered by Muslims in the 14th century, and in 1666 came under the control of the Nawabs of Bengal in the Mughal Empire. From 1760, it was controlled by the British East India Company, and developed into an important port, becoming a base for the development of the Assam region of India. It developed further after Pakistan's independence in 1947, but was devastated during the Bangladesh Independence War in 1971, and restoration took until 1973. It is now a thriving trading port for the country, with jute and tea being the main exports. Industry is also thriving, with industrial zones for steel, fertilizer, chemicals, spinning, jute processing, and oil refining. It also has Chittagong University and an international airport. Population: 1,363,998, metropolitan area 2,046,630 (1991 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
