Messy hair - Messy hair

This is Yosano Akiko's first collection of poems. It was published in August 1901 (Meiji 34) by Tokyo Shinshisha under her former name, Hou Akiko. It was published just three months after Akiko fled her birthplace in Sakai and took refuge with Yosano Hiroshi in Tokyo. Of the 399 poems included, over 100 were original works. It has a sweet freshness in lines such as "I set out into the moonlit evening of the flower fields, feeling somehow that you were waiting for me," but also a sensual world that is overflowing with unrestrained passion, such as "Spring is so short, how can immortal life exist without my hands groping your powerful breasts," and has the impact of making people feel the new era with what Ueda Bin calls "a novel tone of voice and an original way of thinking." Although the influence of early modern poems by Buson, Shimazaki Toson, and Susukida Kyukin can be seen in the background, Akiko's work had a freshness that combined the early modern pictorial quality and Western romanticism with the imperial elegance that she was originally familiar with. This established the tone of the style of "Myojo" and became a major source of modern tanka poetry.

与謝野晶子(よさのあきこ)の第一歌集。1901年（明治34）8月東京新詩社より旧名鳳(ほう)晶子の名で刊行された。晶子が堺(さかい)の生家を出奔して東京の与謝野寛(ひろし)のもとに身を寄せてから、わずか3か月ののちに出版。収録作品399首のうち100余首は書き下ろし作品である。「なにとなく君に待たるるここちして出(い)でし花野の夕月夜かな」のような甘美な初々しさをもつとともに、「春みじかし何に不滅の命ぞとちからある乳を手にさぐらせぬ」などの奔放な情熱のあふれに任せた、官能的な世界を含みもつ華麗な作品は、上田敏(びん)いうところの「斬新(ざんしん)の声調、奇抜の思想」をもって新時代を実感させる衝撃力をもっていた。背景に近世の蕪村(ぶそん)の句や、島崎藤村(とうそん)、薄田泣菫(すすきだきゅうきん)の詩の影響も認められるが、いわば晶子が本来親しんできた王朝的優美に、近世の絵画性や西欧の浪漫(ろうまん)精神をあわせた新鮮さをもっていたといえる。これによって『明星』の作風の基調は確立し、近代短歌の一大源流をなした。
