An archipelago on the continental shelf off the northwest coast of the European continent, consisting of Great Britain, Ireland and the surrounding islands. It has an area of 313,400 km2 and a total population of about 62 million (1996). It is separated from the continent by the Straits of Dover, and its topography is generally low and flat, with a mild climate due to the influence of the westerly winds. It is an advanced industrial region, and agriculture and livestock are also well developed. Culturally, it is divided into the Anglo-Saxon culture of England and the Celtic culture of Ireland. Ireland was conquered by England several times, and in 1801 it became the United Kingdom, but in 1922, with the exception of Northern Ireland, it gained independence as a free state, and politically it is now made up of two countries: Great Britain and Ireland.
