...Elector Joachim II (1535-71) adopted Lutheranism in 1539 and initiated the Reformation, but the confiscation of church and monastery property also served to strengthen the power of the Junkers, and their dominance in the countryside became even more unshakable. Thus, in Brandenburg, the aristocracy-dominated estate system continued until the middle of the 17th century, but during this time Elector Johann Sigismund (1608-19) converted to Calvinism in 1613, and expanded his territory by acquiring the small states of Cleve, Mark, and Ravensberg on the lower Rhine in 1614, and the Duchy of Prussia in 1618, based on his right of succession. During the Thirty Years' War, Brandenburg's initial rebellious attitude towards Swedish intervention led to the country being ravaged by both Swedish and Imperial forces, and the power of the Junkers was considerably weakened.
