It is a solo silicate mineral. It occurs as flat crystals or in bundles. The crystals show a characteristic hemimorphy (crystals with different shapes at both ends), and the name is derived from this crystal shape. It occurs in the oxidation zone of zinc deposits along with other heavy metal secondary minerals. The most common secondary zinc minerals are smithsonite and hydrozincite. In Japan, it occurs at the Kamioka mine in Gifu Prefecture and the Kiura mine in Saiki City, Oita Prefecture. It also occurs very rarely in granitic pegmatites. 結晶は特徴的な異極像hemimorphy(両端の形が異なる結晶)を示し、名称もその結晶形に由来する。
