Japanese: 息ぎれ - いきぎれ（英語表記）breathlessness

Under normal conditions, breathing is not conscious in normal people because the amount of work required is small. However, breathing volume increases significantly during hard work, sports, or when staying at high altitudes. In addition, during various illnesses, breathing efficiency decreases and the excitement of the respiratory center increases abnormally, causing breathing to become conscious, resulting in panting, palpitations, and an unpleasant sensation. This is called shortness of breath. A similar term is "dyspnea," which is often used when the shortness of breath is severe and accompanied by an unpleasant sensation, but many people use it as an exact synonym.

普通の状態では，呼吸運動は正常者では必要とされる仕事量が小さいために，意識されずに行われる。しかし，激しい労働やスポーツ，高地に滞在する場合では，呼吸量が著しく増え，また種々の病気のときには，呼吸の能率が悪くなったり，呼吸中枢の興奮が異常に高まるために呼吸運動が意識されるようになって，はあはあと息をし，動悸を伴ったり，不愉快な感覚を伴うことがある。これを息ぎれという。類似した用語に〈呼吸困難〉があり，息ぎれの程度が強く，不愉快な感覚を伴う場合に用いられることが多いが，息ぎれとまったく同義の語として用いる人も多い。
