A mechanical engineer active in Alexandria around the 3rd or 2nd century BCE. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was the forerunner of other mechanical engineers of this era, such as Philo of Byzantium and Heron of Alexandria, and was the source of all technological activity up until the Roman era. His writings have been lost, but one of the things he is thought to have invented was the water clock, a clock with a moving hand designed to keep the amount of water flowing in from a pipe constant (water pressure constant).
