A title used by Nizari Imams since 1818. Originally an honorary title in the Qajar court of Iran. It was first bestowed on Hasan Ali Shah, who succeeded his father Shah Khalil Allah as Nizari Imam in 1817, when he married the daughter of Fat Ali Shah of the Qajar dynasty in 1818 and was appointed governor of Mahrat and Qom. He is usually called Aga Khan I (1800-81). After failing in his revolt in Kerman under Muhammad Shah in 1838, Hasan fled to Sindh in 1840 via Afghanistan.
