Roswitha

…Germany's first female poet. Also written as Roswitha or Hrotsvith. A nun at Gandersheim Abbey, she wrote eight verse hagiographies, six Terence-style rhyming prose plays, and two historical poems in medieval Latin. Her plays, which belong to the oldest layer of Christian drama, imitate Terence, but reject his pagan immorality and focus exclusively on praising chastity, and have a strong educational intent. All of her works, except for one that was incorporated into a 12th century passion play, were forgotten, but were rediscovered during the humanist period. …
