… In the 16th century, the study of saints was forced to seek historical accuracy in the face of criticism from Protestants, and this led to the development of hagiography. This field of study, which distinguishes legend from fact through the criticism of historical sources, was established in the 17th century by the Benedictine monks, especially the learned monks of the Saint-Maur, and by the Jesuit Heribert Rosweyde (1569-1629). Rosweyde's work was continued by the Jesuit Jean Bolland (1596-1665), who produced the vast Acta Sanctorum (Acta Sanctorum), which is still being studied today by the Bollandist Society, which honors Bolland's name. …
