… In the 16th century, the study of saints was forced to seek historical accuracy in the face of criticism from Protestants, and this led to the development of hagiography. This field of study, which distinguishes legend from fact through the criticism of historical sources, was established in the 17th century by the Benedictine monks, especially the learned monks of the Saint-Maur, and by the Jesuit Heribert Rosweyde (1569-1629). Rosweyde's work was continued by the Jesuit Jean Bolland (1596-1665), who produced the vast Acta Sanctorum (Acta Sanctorum), which is still being studied today by the Bollandist Society, which honors Bolland's name. …

…　聖人伝研究は，16世紀のプロテスタントからの批判の前に歴史的正確さを求める必要に迫られ，ここに聖人伝学hagiographiaが成立した。史料批判によって伝説と史実を峻別するこの学問は，17世紀のベネディクト会系の修道会，なかでもサン･モール会の学僧たちや，イエズス会のロスワイデHeribert Rosweyde(1569‐1629)によって建設された。ロスワイデの仕事はイエズス会士ボランJean Bolland(1596‐1665)に継承され膨大な《聖人伝集(アクタ･サンクトルム)》となり，現在もボランの名を顕彰するボランディスト協会によって研究が続けられている。…
