Solids discharged in large quantities from the purification of water supply and sewerage systems or industrial wastewater. In the narrow sense, it refers to the sediments and flocs that are formed by removing sand during sewage treatment. As sewerage systems have spread, sludge has become a serious environmental problem along with industrial waste. The amount of solidified sludge reaches about 150 tons per 100,000 people per day, but securing landfill space has become a problem. To address this situation, the development of final disposal sites is being promoted, and treatment facilities that dehydrate, dry, and incinerate sludge are being established in various locations.

上下水道あるいは工場廃水の浄化に伴って多量に排出される固形物。狭義には，下水処理で砂を除外した沈殿物やフロックなどをいい，下水道の普及につれて，産業廃棄物とともに重大な環境問題になった。 10万人あたり日量約 150tに達する固形化した汚泥は，埋立てるとしてもその場所の確保が問題となってきている。このような状況に対処するため，最終処分地の整備を進めるとともに汚泥を脱水，乾燥，焼却する処理施設を各地に設けている。
