French organist and composer. Of Hungarian ancestry. After studying under his father, an organist, in his hometown of Lyon, he entered the Brussels Conservatory. He studied under organist JN Lemmens (1823-1881) and others, who were in the tradition of JS Bach. In 1869, he became organist at the Saint-Sulpice Church in Paris, a position he held for 65 years until 1934. In 1890, he became organ professor at the Paris Conservatory, succeeding C. Franck, and later served as professor of composition, among other positions, teaching Vierne, Dupré, Schweitzer, Honegger, Milhaud, and others. He gained fame not only for his improvisations but also for his performances of Bach's works, and together with Schweitzer, he edited five volumes of Bach's Collected Organ Works (1912-1914). As a composer, he was the leading figure in Franck's style, and is known as the originator of the organ symphony, which emphasizes structure. He left behind ten magnificent works (1876-1900), including the 9th Gothic (1895). He also composed many other organ pieces, operas, symphonies, chamber music, and piano pieces. →Organ/Barrese Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
