Todohokke [Village] - Todohokke

Japanese: 椴法華[村] - とどほっけ

A village in Kameda County, Oshima Subprefecture, at the southeastern tip of Hokkaido's Oshima Peninsula. Population 1,802 (1995). The village name comes from the Ainu word topoke (shadow of the cape). Cape Esan at the eastern end juts out into the Pacific Ocean, and active volcanoes Esan (618m) and Maruyama (691m) are on the border with neighboring Esan Town. Forests make up most of the village area, and settlements are scattered along the coastline bordered by mountains. The center is Hachiman Town, and National Route 278 runs to Hakodate. The Esan fishing grounds are nearby, and there is a wide variety of fish such as squid, tuna, cod, and yellowtail, so the village developed as a wealthy fishing village.

北海道渡島（おしま）半島の南東端，渡島支庁亀田郡の村。人口1802(1995)。村名はアイヌ語の〈トーポケ(岬の陰)〉に由来。東端の恵山（えさん）岬が太平洋に突き出し，活火山恵山(618m)，丸山(691m)などが隣接する恵山町との境にある。山林が村域の大部分を占め，山地が迫る海岸沿いに集落が散在する。中心は八幡町（はちまんちよう）で，函館へ国道278号線が通じる。恵山漁場が近くにあり，イカ，マグロ，タラ，ブリなど魚種も豊富で，豊かな漁村として発達した。
