A state in Malaysia at the northern tip of Borneo. Together with Sarawak, it forms East Malaysia. The mountainous region, including Mt. Kinabalu, spreads to the west, the tropical rainforest area is wide, and the coastal plain is narrow. Inland transportation is underdeveloped, and coastal maritime transportation is important. Economically, it has stronger ties with Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore than with the rest of the country. It produces rubber, rice, timber, coconuts, copra, etc. It became a British protectorate in 1882, and was called North Borneo and was ruled by the British North Borneo Company. In 1963, it became a state of Malaysia. The Philippines claimed it, and conflicts continued even after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1966. The population is mostly indigenous people, such as Kadazan (Dusun) at 28% and Bajau at 12%, followed by Chinese at 21% and Malays at 3%. There is also an influx of Filipino Muslims. Unlike the Malay Peninsula, Malays do not have political dominance, and indigenous-led politics continue. The capital is Kota Kinabalu. ^73,619km2 . 2,603,485 people (2000).

ボルネオ島北端部，マレーシアの州。サラワク州とともに東マレーシアを構成する。キナバル山を含む山地が西寄りに広がり，熱帯雨林地域が広く，海岸平野は狭小。内陸交通は未発達で沿岸海上交通が重要である。経済的には，国内よりも日本，香港，シンガポールとの結びつきが強い。ゴム，米，木材，ココナッツ，コプラ等を産する。1882年英保護領となり，北ボルネオと呼ばれイギリス北ボルネオ会社が支配した。1963年マレーシアの一州となる。フィリピンが領有を主張し，1966年の両国国交樹立後も紛争が続いた。住民はカダザン（ドゥスン）28％，バジャウ12％などの先住民が多く，次いで華人21％，マレー人３％など。フィリピン・ムスリムの流入も見られる。マレー半島部と異なりマレー人の政治的優位は見られず，先住民主導の政治が続いている。主都はコタ・キナバル。７万3619km²。260万3485人（2000）。
