…Then André Herre and Eddy Legrand, who used hand-drawn stencils to color, and in the 1930s Fyodor Rojankovsky and Nathalie Paran achieved success with fresh, realistic styles in lithographs for Père Castor's Art Books. At the same time, Jean de Brunhoff (1899-1937) captured the world market with his Babar the Elephant, and during the war, when supplies were scarce, Samivel produced sophisticated picture books in two-color printing.

During the imperial era in Russia, the tradition of Ivan Bilibin illustrating Krylov and other characters with dark medieval passion was continued even after the revolution.
