Born 12 November 1615, Lawton, Shropshire Died December 8, 1691, London. English Puritan clergyman and theologian. Ordained to the Church of England in 1638, he became a Puritan in opposition to the episcopacy system, and in 1641 became the rector of Kidderminster. During the Civil War he sided with Parliament, and served as a military chaplain to Cromwell's army from 1645 to 1647. In 1653 he founded the Worcester Society. His sermons are considered classics of Puritanism, and he was a moderate thinker, theologically belonging to conciliatory Calvinism. He cooperated with Charles II at the Restoration, but was severely persecuted and imprisoned for his Puritan beliefs. He was pardoned in 1688. His major works include Saints' Everlasting Rest (1650) and The Reformed Pastor (56).
