A powerful clan in ancient Iyo Province. Based in Ochi County (present-day Ochi County, Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture), it is said to be descended from Emperor Korei's grandson Ochi no Miko. In the pre-Taika period, they appeared as Ochi kuni no miyatsuko, and under the Ritsuryo system, they wielded great influence as gunji of Ochi County. Many of them had the surname Atai. Some of the clan members were also active in the central government, such as Ochi Naohiroe, who became a university doctor, and Ochi Naoyoshi, who was involved in the compilation of the Shinsen Shojiroku. In the mid-Heian period, many of the clan members gained the position of miscellaneous kokushi, such as Iyo no jo (Iyo no jo) or domoku (Iyo no sakan), and entered the provincial government as resident officials.
