Kyoho Reforms

Japanese: 享保改革 - きょうほうかいかく

During the Kyoho era (1716-1735), Tokugawa Yoshimune carried out various reforms in the Shogunate's politics. He attempted to restore finances through austerity measures, imposing tashitaka (a tax on rice), imposing high-quality rice taxes on feudal lords, and encouraging the development of new fields in rural areas, which led to increased tax revenues. He compiled the Kojikata Osadaragaki and Gofukugaki Shusei as the Shogunate's first legal codes. He also set up a suggestion box to convey orders to the lower classes, and relaxed restrictions on the import of Western books translated into Chinese.

享保年間（1716年−1735年），徳川吉宗による幕府政治の諸改革。緊縮政策による財政の立直しを図って足高(たしだか)を行い，諸大名には上米(あげまい)を課し，農村には新田開発を奨励して年貢収納は増大した。幕府最初の法典として公事方御定書，御触書集成を編纂。また下意上達のため目安箱を設置し，漢訳洋書の輸入制限を緩和した。
