Born: July 21, 1858 in Tapiau [Died] July 17, 1925. German painter born in Zandvoort, East Prussia, the Netherlands. He studied at the Kunstakademie in Königsberg from 1876 to 1880, and at the Munich Art Academy from 1880 to 1884, and worked in Paris from 1884 to 1887. He moved to Berlin in 1900. His early works were realistic, influenced by P. Rubens and F. Hals, but he eventually turned to plein air painting, and from 1911 to 1912 he led the Berlin Secession, becoming a representative figure of German Impressionism. After suddenly suffering a stroke in 1911, his work gradually became more expressionistic. From 1918 onwards, he frequently visited Walchensee and produced a series of landscapes. In addition to landscapes, portraits and still lifes, he also painted religious and historical paintings, and in his later years he also produced some excellent lithographs and etchings. His works include Selbstbiographie (1926), an autobiography. Corinth |
