Also written as "Funamoto." In the Edo period, this term refers to a fishing business owner who provided nets and fishing boats for net fishing and lining fishing. In contrast, the fishermen who were employed to work on board were called "Amiko," "Tsuriko," or "Funakata." In the case of the yellowtail platform net fishing in Fujinami, Fugeshi County, on the eastern coast of the Noto Peninsula (Ishikawa Prefecture), the upper and lower net groups operated two fishing grounds owned by all the peasants in a rotation every other year, and in each net group, peasants were allocated shares according to their holdings, and provided labor and assets in accordance with their holdings and received a share of the profits. However, as the peasants' stratification progressed, the shares were concentrated in the hands of a small group of o-taka-mochi who were also village officials, and the fishing grounds came to be run with their assets.
