Naofumi Ochiai - Naofumi Ochiai

Japanese:
Naofumi Ochiai - Naofumi Ochiai

Poet and Japanese literature scholar. Born on November 22, 1861, to the Ayukai family, a senior retainer of the Date clan in Rikuzen Province (Miyagi Prefecture), his childhood name was Kamejiro. He was known as Sakuranoya and Haginoya. He was adopted by Ochiai Naoaki and changed his name to Naofumi. He studied at the Ise Shrine Academy, where he studied national history and Japanese literature. He moved to Tokyo in 1881 (Meiji 14), and enrolled in the Classics Department of the University of Tokyo the following year, but dropped out in 1883 due to military service. In 1888, he became a Japanese literature instructor at the Koten Kokyusho. In the same year, he published a long poem, "Song of the Filial Daughter, the White Chrysanthemum," in the Journal of the Society for Oriental Studies, which caused a sensation with its romantic epic poem in 7-5 rhythm. In 1892, he presented a theory on the innovation of waka poetry, which presented a new perspective on poetry, in the inaugural issue of the magazine "Kagaku." He edited and published works such as "The Great Japanese Literature Encyclopedia" and "The Fountain of Words," and achieved success as a scholar of Japanese literature and an educator. In 1893, he founded the "Asakasha" association, which nurtured many talented poets, including Yosano Tekkan, Kaneko Kunen, and Onoe Saishu, as a new school of waka poetry. He aimed to improve poetry, tanka, and prose, and demonstrated this in his own works.

The characteristic of his poems is that they change from a style of poetry that expresses the deep feelings of a patriot to an elegant state of historical poetry, and from emotional poetry to a state that is penetrating to the pathos of life, with a style that has a flowing melody. He passed away on December 16, 1903. After his death, he published "Haginoie Ikou" (1904) and "Haginoie Kashu" (1906).
