In English, it is called “rough music,” in German, “Katzenmusik,” and in Italian, “scampanate.” The most common subject of charivari is in cases surrounding remarriage, where a widower and a young girl, or a young man and a widow of a different age, and one of the partners is a stranger, are the perfect subjects for charivari. …
