1870‐1949 Founder of Bank of America, one of the world's largest banks. Born in California to Italian immigrants, he worked for his father's agricultural produce business in his youth. In 1901 he became an executive of the Columbus Savings Association, but resigned after clashing with other executives over management policies. In 1904 he established the Bank of Italy in San Francisco, and was one of the first to provide loans after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, contributing to the city's reconstruction. He subsequently expanded his branch network by merging smaller banks one after another, and established a holding company to oversee them.
