...As the saying goes, "Leave Kyoto and stay overnight in Moriyama" suggests, Moriyama was located on the average daily itinerary from Kyoto, and many guests stayed overnight there. During the Shotoku era (1711-16), Yoshimi, located to the east of Moriyama, and Imajuku, located to the west, were added as additional lodgings, forming a series of post towns. In 1843 (Tenpo 14), the area covered 11 cho (11 blocks) and 53 ken (53 ken), with a population of 1,700 people and 415 houses (including 2 honjin (main inns), 1 wakihonjin (secondary inns), and 30 hatagoya (hotagoya)).
