Kaoru Nakada

A scholar of Japanese legal history. Doctor of Law. Graduated from the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Law, Tokyo Imperial University in 1900 (Meiji 33). Immediately entered graduate school and studied the legal system of the Kamakura period under Professor Miyazaki Michisaburo. His research report, "Research on Manors in the Imperial Period," published in 1906, is considered a classic in Japanese history. He became an associate professor at Tokyo Imperial University in 1902, and a professor in 1911. Japanese legal history, which was established by Dr. Miyazaki, was systematized by the doctor. His research covers various periods and areas of Japanese legal history, but his research on villages and membership in the Edo period and the early Meiji period made a great contribution to elucidating the issue of membership under current law. He also had a deep knowledge of foreign law, especially Chinese law. He became a member of the Imperial Academy in 1925 (Taisho 14), and received the Order of Culture in 1946 (Showa 21).

日本法制史の学者。法学博士。1900年（明治33）東京帝国大学法科大学政治学科を卒業。ただちに大学院に入り、宮崎道三郎教授の下で鎌倉時代の法制を研究。その研究報告として06年に発表した『王朝時代の庄園(しょうえん)に関する研究』は日本史学上の古典とされる。02年に東京帝国大学助教授、11年教授。宮崎博士によって基礎を据えられた日本法制史学は、博士によって体系化された。その研究は日本法制史の各時代各部門にわたるが、江戸時代および明治初年の村および入会(いりあい)に関する研究は、現行法上の入会問題の解明に多大の貢献をした。外国法ことに中国法に関する造詣(ぞうけい)も深かった。25年（大正14）に帝国学士院会員となり、46年（昭和21）には文化勲章を受けた。
