A city on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Rome in the Lazio region in central-west Italy. It is located 76 km northwest of Rome by road. Since its construction by Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century, it has served as Rome's outer port, and is still important today as a connecting port with the island of Sardinia. After World War II, a thermal power plant was built, and factories producing cement, bricks, machinery, and marble have been established here. It is home to a fortress completed by Michelangelo and the National Archaeological Museum. Population 50,856 (1991 estimate).
