A city in eastern Cuba. It is located on a gently rolling plain about 30 km inland from the Atlantic coast. It was founded in the first half of the 16th century by H. Holguin, who participated in the conquest of Mexico. It was a base for rebellions during the Ten Years' War (1868-78) and the Cuban War of Independence (1895-98), and suffered heavy damage. It is now the center of the surrounding agricultural region, where sugar cane, tobacco, livestock, etc. are collected, distributed, and processed. It is about 100 km north-northwest of Santiago de Cuba and is connected by road. The outer port of Gibara is located on the Atlantic coast to the north. Population: 222,794 (1989 estimate).
