Crab bat

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family that grows under the coniferous forests of Honshu and Shikoku north of Kinki. The stem is 0.6-1m tall. The leaves are about three in number, resembling the shell of a crab, with a glossy upper surface and irregular sawtooth edges. The flower heads are small, white, and consist of 3-5 tubular flowers that grow in a thin cone shape at the end of the stem in August-September. The closely related Momijigasa has palmate leaves similar to maples, and is found from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Young shoots are called Shidoke or Shitogi and are used as wild vegetables.

近畿以北の本州と四国の針葉樹林帯の林下にはえるキク科の多年草。茎は高さ0.6〜1m。葉は３枚内外で，形はカニの甲を思わせ，上面には光沢があり縁には不整の鋸歯(きょし)がある。頭花は小さく，白色で３〜５個の筒状花のみからなり，８〜９月，茎の先に細い円錐状につく。近縁のモミジガサは葉がモミジに似て掌状，北海道〜九州に分布し，若芽はシドケ，シトギと呼ばれ山菜として利用される。
