A village in Uma District, eastern Ehime Prefecture. Population 2003 (1995). Located in the middle reaches of the Dozan River, a tributary of the Yoshino River, most of the village area is mountainous, belonging to the Houou Mountain Range. The central settlement, Shingu, belonged to Yamada-go, which appears in the ancient Wamyōshō, and was an important transportation location at the intersection of the Dozan River, which was a route to Awa Province and an official road leading from Iyo Province (present-day Imabari City) to Tosa Province (present-day Nangoku City). An inscription on a sacred mirror from 1223, which was excavated in the grounds of Kumano Shrine in the village, reads Komi Shingu. There is also a Kumano Shrine, which is said to have been enshrined from Shingu in Kii Province in 807 (Daido 2), and the village flourished as the most sacred place of Kumano faith in Shikoku.
