Japanese: ホシミドロ - ほしみどろ

A genus of freshwater algae in the family Zygophyceae, Chlorophyceae, which is green and hairy and grows in rice paddies, ponds, etc.; similar to Spirogyra but distinguished by its star-shaped chloroplasts. Like Spirogyra, two individuals, male and female, are connected by a mating tube and reproduce sexually by transferring cell contents to join. About 25 species are known in Japan. Species are classified according to whether the zygote is produced inside the mating tube or female gametophore, whether the zygote is yellowish brown, indigo blue, or colorless, whether the zygote cell wall has a pore pattern, and how large the pores are.

水田，池沼などに生育する緑色，毛状の藻類で，アオミドロに似るが葉緑体が星形である点で区別される，緑藻綱ホシミドロ科の淡水藻の1属。アオミドロと同様に，雌雄の2個体が接合管で連結し，細胞内容が移動して接合する有性生殖を行う。日本では約25種が知られる。種の分類は，接合子がつくられるのが接合管内か雌性配偶子囊内か，接合子の色調は黄褐色か藍色または無色か，接合子の細胞壁に小孔模様があるかないか，小孔の大きさはどのくらいかなどによってなされている。
