King of Italy (reigned 888-924); Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 915-924). Marquis of Friuli. When Holy Roman Emperor Charles III was dethroned in 887, the Carolingian line (male line) in Italy became extinct, and the various princes engaged in a fierce power struggle. Berengar, the son of Louis the Pious' daughter, was elected king of Italy in 888 and was a central figure in this struggle until his death. In 889, Guido, Duke of Spoleto, advanced to the position of king of Italy (he was crowned emperor in 891), and a fierce conflict arose between him and Berengar.

イタリア王(在位888‐924)，神聖ローマ皇帝(在位915‐924)。フリウリ侯。887年神聖ローマ皇帝カール3世が廃位されるとイタリアにおけるカロリング家の系統(男系)が絶え，諸侯は激しい権力闘争を行った。ルートウィヒ1世(敬虔王)の娘の子にあたるベレンガーリオは888年イタリア王に選出され，その死にいたるまでこの抗争の中心人物であった。889年にはスポレート公グイードGuidoが進出してイタリア王の冠を受けると(891年皇帝戴冠)，ベレンガーリオとのあいだに激しい抗争が生じた。
