Traditionally, cloud measurements were limited to observations by the naked eye from the ground, but since the latter half of World War II, weather radar has gradually come into use, and in recent years, weather satellites have made it possible to grasp the amount and characteristics of clouds over a wide area from space. Weather satellites observe the atmosphere from space, and Japan's weather satellite Himawari, for example, observes light in two wavelength ranges.
