Odakyu Electric Railway

A private railway company. The company was established in 1923 and merged with Odawara Kyuko Land in 1927, and began operating the line. It merged with Teito Dentetsu (now Keio Dentetsu) in 1940, and Kinugawa Hydroelectric Power in 1941, changing its name to Odakyu Electric Railway. It merged with Tokyo Yokohama Electric Railway and Keihin Electric Railroad (now Keikyu Corporation) in 1942 to become Tokyu Corporation. In 1948, it was separated from the former and established as the current company in accordance with the Law Concentration of Excessive Economic Power. It connects Tokyo to Enoshima and Odawara via central Kanagawa Prefecture, and runs on the Hakone Tozan Railway between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto. It also has a mutual interchange with the Chiyoda Subway Line at Yoyogi-Uehara Station, and a connection with the JR Joban Line at Ayase Station. In addition to the railway, the company also operates buses, real estate, amusement parks, and other businesses. Odakyu has many affiliated companies, including Odakyu Department Store, Odakyu Real Estate, Odakyu Construction, Odakyu Bus, Hakone Tozan Railway, and Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu. Its lines include the Odawara Line (Shinjuku - Odawara 82.5km), the Enoshima Line (Sagami-Ono - Katase Enoshima 27.4km), and the Tama Line 10.6km, with a total operating mileage of 121.6km, and buses 165.7km. The company's business activities are 70% railway, 1% automobile, and 29% ancillary businesses. Annual operating revenue is 553,059 million yen (consolidated), capital is 60,359 million yen, and the number of employees is 3,967 (1999).
